Housed in an old railway station, Barter Books is one of the largest second-hand bookshops in Europe.
The shop hit the headlines in 2000 when an original 1939 World War II poster with the slogan “Keep Calm and Carry On” was discovered in a box by the owner. The design and slogan of the poster has since become widely copied and commercialised.
Barter Books is a wonderful place to spend some time, with thousands of books to browse, plenty of armchairs for relaxing and reading, open fires and an excellent cafe.
Even if you’re not an avid reader, Barter Books is well worth a visit.
Great for dogs because they’re very welcome in Barter Books, and there’s even a dog friendly section of the cafe so you can relax and have a coffee or lunch with your pooch.
Great for kids because there’s a model railway running above your head as you stroll around the shop and there’s a children’s room with plenty of toys to keep little ones entertained for a while. Young bookworms will love exploring the seemingly endless maze of books on sale.
